Vermilion Peak

Early season snow conditions have been fantastic!

Even a great day at the resort will make me crave a touring day. We decided to try Vermilion Peak as the Lake Louise area would be unpleasantly cold, and things near Banff were a bit more moderate. I was also hoping for an inversion, as one was quite evident the day before.

The disused road was perfect for my new waxless skis, but once we started heading up the southwest face of Vermilion Peak, skins were a necessity.

One way to get a face shot
Once we got into the trees, we were protected from the cold wind and things were quite pleasant. At one point, Joanne's thermometer read -6C.

Once we stopped heading up, there was a steep cliff between us and the avalanche gully, so we skied the trees for about 100m before coming out into the exposed terrain. The snowpack was about 1.2m in depth, and a compression test showed a moderate failure on the November facets, although to be fair my test block ended up being on top of a bush.

We all proceeded to ski the gully, one at a time, down to a more gentle section where things branched off in two directions. We then skied together down the left branch which reconnected with the usual uptracks.

The area had seen a lot of traffic, but a fresh layer of snow made everything great. And now, I crave more touring!
