Goat Creek

Canmore typically does not get a lot of snow, but this year has been different.

There have been years when Goat Creek has been in poor condition all winter due to the usual lack of snow in Canmore. However, it's been a great winter so far and trail conditions around Canmore are fantastic, especially for this time of year.

Carol, Simon, and I decided to do a shuttle trip, starting at the Goat Creek trailhead in Kananaskis Country, just south of Whiteman's Gap, and ending at the Spray River trailhead in Banff, just behind the Banff Springs Hotel. This required some organization in the morning (leaving a car in Banff then driving back to Canmore to start skiing), but it was worth it as the direction we skied resulted in the loss of about 250m of elevation.

All the bridges are in great shape after the summer's maintenance
The amount of snow along the trail was quite impressive. I'd biked this trail before a couple of times, but had never been here on skis.

A frosty day
There were some very obvious cold pockets along the valley, dipping down to -20C in places, but it was downright pleasant in others at around -5C.

I'm glad I finally got to do this trail, and I'd definitely do it again.
