Vermilion Peak

No photos for today (stupid me forgot the memory card), but just some observations about conditions on Vermilion Peak.

We mostly followed existing tracks on climber's right of the first avalanche slide path.

Just above treeline, the snowpack was deeper than 3.2m (the length of my avalanche probe). Just below treeline, however, snow depth was about 1.4m. The bottom 60cm was all facets.

The February 10th crust was bonding pretty well with the snow above it. I did an extended column test, with a break at 26 hits and no propagation.

We stayed in the trees on the way down, and ski quality was fantastic. As we got lower, we could feel a couple of faint crusts, but that was about it.

Probably my best run of the season.
