Revelstoke and Whistler

We spent some time at the Revelstoke and Whistler / Blackcomb ski resorts.

Aki wanted to attend the Girls Do Ski camp in Revelstoke, so we decided to make an extended trip out of it, skiing for 3 days in Revelstoke then moving on to Whistler / Blackcomb for another 4 days.

Revelstoke

I really like this resort. It's simple, with only 3 lifts (1 gondola and 2 high speed quads), but the elevation gain is incredible (1713m) and the terrain is really varied and interesting. It hadn't snowed in over a week when we got there, but the quality of snow was such that we could still find good runs in the moguls or the trees.

The glades are incredible. There are gentle blue glades and steep double-black glades, and everything in-between.

We didn't hike to the summit as it looked wind crusted and there wasn't much fresh snow around, but it's something I'll check out next time.

The town itself was covered in clouds the entire time we were there, which seemed a bit depressing.

Whistler / Blackcomb

This place is HUGE. Each mountain, by itself, is a huge resort. Put together, this place is massive and has something for everyone, including lift tickets for $99!

It hadn't snowed significantly in two weeks, but it snowed every night we were there, which was promising. The first day was not great, with every non-groomed run being scraped up. By the fourth day, we were skiing on powder.

The most interesting areas were the Blackcomb glacier (accessed via the Showcase T-bar) and the Harmony bowl. We didn't get a chance to go to Creekside as it was far too warm at the base of the mountain, and we figured the snow conditions wouldn't be great. Even up high, things felt dense and a bit crusty.

Conclusion

The drive back home from Whistler took 10 hours via Lillooet. It's a beautiful drive and much better than getting within an hour of Vancouver. For whatever reason, gas in Kamloops is significantly cheaper than anywhere else along the way.

We will definitely go back to Revelstoke sometime. Whistler ... it's a bit far and the snow quality is not the greatest, even though they get a lot.
