Skogan Pass

I'd always wondered what the clearing in the pass next to Pigeon Mountain was.

The trail heading up to Skogan Pass starts near the Bronze chairlift at the Nakiska ski resort. As usual, an army of kids were getting ready for their races, and it was kind of weird skiing between them on track skis.

Joining up with the old fireroad

I can remember the area not having enough snow in some years, but things looked respectable on this day. As usual, the wind was howling in this part of Kanasaskis Country, but we were in the trees most of the way and the shelter was welcome.

A gentle but relentlessly steady uphill went on for about 8.4km before suddenly topping out at Skogan Pass, from where we could see the powerline cutout all the way down to Dead Man's Flats.

Dead Man's Flats and Canmore

There is a trail leading down to Dead Man's Flats, but as we had not prepared a shuttle, we had lunch on the pass (which was terribly windy, even through the trees) then turned back.

Be wary of those in the shadows

The relentless uphill made for a very fun downhill. I'd guess it took about 3.5 hours to get to the pass, but less than an hour to get back down.

Lots of old signage on this trail

We added a final bit of spice to the day by skiing down one of the Nakiska runs on our skinny skis. Parallel turns were possible but not very smooth, so I just tucked and burned down to the lodge. Got a few looks from the parents waiting for their kids, but otherwise a fine end to a great day.
