Mount Shark

The winter of cross country continues at the Mount Shark trail system.

This was probably the largest group I had ever organized for skiing. 10 people (myself included) decided to spend the day at the Mount Shark trails for a leisurely day of classic.

There were a couple of beginners, so the goal was just to get to Watridge Lake and back. People who felt a bit more adventurous could do some of the other loops, or even ski to the bridge crossing the creek from Spray Lakes Reservoir (I'm not sure what the creek is called ... maybe Currie Creek?).

The clouds rolled in and out all day, and the wind picked up as we got closer to the Great Divide. However, it was still a beautiful day with enough blue skies to keep our spirits up.

When we got to the Watridge Lake intersection, half the group decided to continue onwards towards Mount Assiniboine. At the bridge crossing Currie Creek (?), we were granted a beautiful display of sun on Cone Mountain.

Going back up the big hill took some time, as several groups were descending. Some skiers decided that walking would be a bit safer, so that added to the wait.

Fierce determination

Once we got back to Watridge Lake, the other half of the group were very patient with us as we had lunch then posed for a group photo while standing on the frozen lake.

There were some very large groups on the trail by the time we started heading back to our cars. Starting early (comparatively speaking) was definitely the right thing to do.

Afterwards, we had some excitement as one car in our extended group did a 180 on the Smith-Dorrien on the way back to Canmore. Fortunately, everyone was alright and the occupants got home safely.
