Picklejar Lakes

After the aggressive destinations the last few weeks, I decided to join Carol and Simon to do something a little more leisurely.

Picklejar Lakes is located in southern Kananaskis Country and is very popular amongst anglers. There is also an exposed scramble that goes counter clockwise around the ridge.

The trail goes through fairly heavy forest for the first hour or so, then changes into rubble for another 30 minutes before the first lake appears.

The happy inukshuk

The first two lakes were a bit murky, but the third lake was quite pretty with deep turquoise waters and an amphitheatre of rock surrounding it.

The third lake

The fourth lake is just beyond the third lake, and is nothing special. We came back to the third lake to have lunch.

A couple of groups were already there, having camped the night before. The ground was quite rocky but the setting was very pretty. Unfortunately, it's a one-way street, so would only make for a one night trip unless you wanted to spend the middle days fishing.

Lots of these big spiders running around

We spent about an hour relaxing and saw 3 or 4 groups come and go. On our way down, we encountered a train of people coming up, so were glad to have gotten there early to enjoy a bit of peace.

Colours

Overall, the location was a little crowded for my tastes, but the third lake was quite nice.
