Mount Tallac

Our first hike in South Lake Tahoe!

As you drive south along Lake Tahoe Boulevard, the ridge of Mount Tallac dominates the skyline. It's not the tallest peak in the Desolation Wilderness, but it's close, at 9739 feet, and the trailhead is a mere 10 minutes drive from our place.

Our destination, way up there!
The trail starts in the woods, next to Fallen Leaf Lake, and steadily climbs pretty much the entire 7.5km up to the summit. In places, there is still enough snow to require detours, but as long as you keep heading up, things work out.

There are marmots here!
We had the summit to ourselves for about 30 minutes, which was super nice as we ate lunch and watched the chipmunks and ground squirrels fight for any food we might drop.

This guy was definitely not shy.
This was definitely a good first hike in the Lake Tahoe area. We hope to visit more peaks in the coming months. Stay tuned!
