Mount Baldy

Mount Baldy is one of my favourite hikes in Southern California.

People are starting to train for the summer hiking season, and that means bagging the local peaks every weekend. Due to the lack of snow this winter, Baldy is pretty much perfectly clear all the way to the summit and back out via the ski resort.

We parked at Manker Flats and took the Ski Hut trail all the way to the summit. As the group was quite large, with a wide range of abilities, there was significant separation between the lead and the sweep. I hung out at the summit for about an hour to take two group shots on the summit.

We encountered one group with backcountry ski gear on their backs. I lauded them for their optimism.

We took the Devil's Backbone on the return loop. On the way down from the lodge, I took the trail directly underneath the ski lift. It shaved the hike down by 30 minutes, although it was loose and steep in places.

A beautiful day with a great group of people.
