Heavy rains forecast for Calgary, Canmore, and Banff. What to do? The answer was to go high and far, and Crowfoot Pass seemed like a good option.
On the drive up, the amount of snow on the side of the road was significantly less than a month ago, when I was here last. We figured there wouldn't be any sanding trucks coming by, so parked at the closest point to the trail.
A good day to park by the side of the road |
Crossing Bow Lake felt a little sketchy, but we didn't experience any cracks and the snow didn't feel too slushy.
Not the work of a registered nurse |
We did have some crust in the trees which made some sections of the skin up a bit awkward. However, once we broke through into treeline, the crust was very supportive and we had maybe a couple of centimetres of penetration due to a light dusting of powder.
Out of the trees, into the alpine |
There were some big cornices hanging off of Crowfoot Mountain, but the sun was mostly hiding in the clouds.
On top of the pass |

The only people I saw all day |
We arrived at the pass at 10:55am, perfect for a nice run back on softening snow. The pass was a bit chilly due to some wind, but the sun was starting to peak out.
We managed to make it back while only skinning once, and the exposed slope at the end was very nice.
Sun-blessed tracks |
Winter may be over, but ski season still lives on!
